"For twenty years, Howard Taubman, music editor of the New York Times, has been collecting material for a biography of Arturo Toscanini. Last spring, accompanying the maestro on his transcontinental tour of several weeks, he had the opportunity to crystallize and complete his research. For Mr. Taubman's reports on that tour, he received the 1950 prize of the Music Lovers League. For the present book, he should receive some sort of prize from the public at large. It is based on attendance at hundreds of the maestro's concerts and dozens of his rehearsals; the reading of everything that has been written about him; the examination of many scores in which Toscanini made his own notes; the interviewing, both here and in Italy, of dozens of men and women who had worked with Toscanini; and the close friendship and co-operation of several of the maestro's immediate family. Finally came the weeks of the transcontinental trip, during which Mr. Taubman asked hundreds of questions. This book quotes, verbatim, the answers to many of them. The story begins with the boy Toscanini and how he left his famiy to enter the Musical Conservatory at Parma at the age of nine. It then goes on to show how he wanted more than anything else to become a pianist; how the rigid monastic discipline of the Conservatory forced him to become a cellist; and how he gradually evolved, without specific plan, into becoming the greatest conductor that the world has ever known. We see, in these pages, how he prepares his concerts, how he fought with impresarios, boards of governors, fellow musicians, and even politicians to maintain the highest possible standards in music. He has always been a fighter; and even today, at the age of eighty-four, he can become first the despair of those who work with him, and then their god. As the long musical career unrolls magnificently before us, as we trace his relationships with Italy and America, with his family and his friends, we come into contact with a great man and a great personality. We are able to gauge his courage, his convictions, his sense of humor and of proportion. For the first time, we see the man Toscanini as a whole.
