Universities, and the societies they serve, suffer from a crisis of meaning: We have fanatically developed our ability to produce knowledge, leaving our ability to craft meaning by the wayside. University graduates often have an abundance of knowledge but lack the wisdom to use it meaningfully. Meanwhile, people inside and outside academia are searching for meaning but are imprisoned in a lexicon of clichés and sound bites that stunts their quest. In response, Learning for Meaning’s Sake begins with the assertion that higher education in the 21st century should renounce its obsession with job training and knowledge production and should, instead, turn toward questions of meaning. Drawing upon a diverse range of philosophical thought, Learning for Meaning’s Sake offers the vision and philosophical foundation for a new type of higher learning-one that is devoted to the existential questions at the core of human existence.

Teaching Interpreting and Live Subtitling: Contexts, Modes and Technologies provides a cross section of multinational perspectives on teaching various dimensions of interpreting and live subtitling, both within dedicated programmes and as part of individual modules on interpreting and/or live subtitling-adjacent programmes. Interpreting training and live subtitling training have been undergoing rapid and far-reaching transformations in recent years because of technological advances and the sweeping shifts in the contexts within which they seek to mediate, ultimately bringing about new modes. This volume covers the broad spectrum of interpreting and live subtitling trainings and discusses the possibility of how a more unified approach to training for live subtitlers and interpreters could lead to a future where the topics merge to become a single, complementary specialised stream of training that brings live subtitling equally into the forefront of the translation teaching field. The book provides an overview of the role played by technology in interpreting in general and uses up-to-date perspectives and research to ensure that interpreting and live subtitling training remains robust and resilient far into the 21st century. It will be of particular interest to professionals, scholars and teachers of translation studies and interpreting studies.

Interpretation written by Peter Machamer and has been published by University of Pittsburgh Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06-27 with Science categories.

The act of interpretation occurs in nearly every area of the arts and sciences. That ubiquity serves as the inspiration for the fourteen essays of this volume from the Pittsburgh-Konstanz series, covering many of the domains in which interpretive practices are found. Individual topics include: the general nature of interpretation and its forms; comparing and contrasting interpretation and hermeneutics; culture as interpretation seen through Hegel's aesthetics; interpreting philosophical texts; methodologies for interpreting human action; interpretation in medical practice focusing on manifestations as indicators of disease; the brain and its interpretative, structured, learning and storage processes; interpreting hybrid wines and cognitive preconceptions of novel objects; and the importance of sensory perception as means of interpreting in the case of dry German Rieslings. In an interesting turn, Nicholas Rescher writes on the interpretation of philosophical texts. Then Catherine Wilson and Andreas Blank explicate and critique Rescher's theories through analysis of the mill passage from Leibniz's Monadology.

The Effects Of Personality Hardiness On Interpreting Performance written by Xing Xing and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-10-03 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This book sheds new light on personality dispositions research into interpreter performance, injecting fresh impetus for a new research agenda designed to further our understanding of hardiness–performance linkages in interpreters. Interpreters are made not born (Mackintosh, 1999: 67), i.e., it is generally assumed that everyone has the potential to become an interpreter, given proper training. Nonetheless, time constraints and financial limitations make it advisable to select applicants who need the least training. Aptitude testing for interpreting, with a purpose to admitting the most promising candidates, has thus become not only a practical necessity for institutions but also a central issue among interpreting researchers. The book presents a literature review and empirical survey, which reveal, e.g., that aptitude testing for interpreting attaches great importance to cognitive aptitude. In contrast, non-cognitive attributes (personality in particular), while also considered important, are seldom measured, due to their complex structure and the lack of scientific measurement tools. Bearing this gap in mind, the book focuses on research into personality traits in aptitude testing for interpreting, with an aim to expanding the objective means of testing candidates for the requisite knowledge and skills. It is devoted to an empirical investigation into the effects of personality hardiness on interpreting performance, with interpreting anxiety and self-efficacy as two intermediates. To this end, a quantitative method (questionnaire survey) and a qualitative in-depth interview were used with 149 Chinese student interpreters at postgraduate level. The results indicate that personality hardiness is a valuable trait for student interpreters. By systematically presenting the effects of personality hardiness on interpreting performance, the book offers both theoretical and empirical stepping stones to understanding the position of personality hardiness in aptitude testing for interpreting, providing stakeholders with valuable insights into and blueprints for selecting the most teachable candidates for interpreting training programs.

This textbook is a comprehensive guide to machine learning and artificial intelligence tailored for students in business and economics. It takes a hands-on approach to teach machine learning, emphasizing practical applications over complex mathematical concepts. Students are not required to have advanced mathematics knowledge such as matrix algebra or calculus. The author introduces machine learning algorithms, utilizing the widely used R language for statistical analysis. Each chapter includes examples, case studies, and interactive tutorials to enhance understanding. No prior programming knowledge is needed. The book leverages the tidymodels package, an extension of R, to streamline data processing and model workflows. This package simplifies commands, making the logic of algorithms more accessible by minimizing programming syntax hurdles. The use of tidymodels ensures a unified experience across various machine learning models. With interactive tutorials that students can download and follow along at their own pace, the book provides a practical approach to apply machine learning algorithms to real-world scenarios. In addition to the interactive tutorials, each chapter includes a Digital Resources section, offering links to articles, videos, data, and sample R code scripts. A companion website further enriches the learning and teaching experience: https://ai.lange-analytics.com. This book is not just a textbook; it is a dynamic learning experience that empowers students and instructors alike with a practical and accessible approach to machine learning in business and economics. Key Features: Unlocks machine learning basics without advanced mathematics — no calculus or matrix algebra required.
