Why dissenters can be an organization's most valuable asset and how to transform dissent into innovation Innovation is essential to competitive survival in today's global marketplace. Written by a leading international expert on change management, this groundbreaking book explores the vital link between the need for innovation in the e-business world and the new role of dissenters as agents for constructive change. With the help of numerous case examples and anecdotes, Frances Horibe helps managers appreciate the value that dissent can bring to an organization, and she provides proven strategies and hands-on advice on how to encourage innovation and manage creative dissent, while avoiding paralyzing conflicts. As we move into an era of simultaneous innovation and commoditization, enabled by digital technologies, managers around the world are asking themselves "how can we both adapt to rapid changes in technology and markets, and still make enough money to survive - and thrive?" To provide answers to these important and urgent questions, MIT Sloan School of Management Professor Michael Cusumano draws on nearly 30 years of research into the practices of global corporations that have been acknowledged leaders and benchmark setters - and Microsoft, Apple, Intel, Google, and others in software, internet services, and consumer electronics, and Toyota in manufacturing. If we look deeply enough, he contends, we can see the ideas that underpin the management practices that make for great companies, and drive their strategic evolution and innovation capabilities. From his deep knowledge of these organizations, Cusumano distils six enduring principles that he believes have been - in various combinations - crucial to their strategy, innovation management practices, and ability to deal with change and uncertainty. The first two principles - platforms (not just products), and services, for product firms - are relatively new and broader ways of thinking about strategy and business models, based on Cusumano's latest research. The other four - capabilities (not just strategy), the "pull" concept, economies of scope, and flexibility (not just efficiency) - all contribute to agility, which is a mix of flexibility and speed. Some practices associated with these ideas, such as dynamic capabilities, just-in-time production, iterative or prototype-driven product development, flexible design and manufacturing, modular architectures, and component reuse, are now commonly regarded as standard best practices. They are also essential to a new world dominated by platforms and technology-enabled services.

The Politics Of Innovation written by Mark Zachary Taylor and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-04 with Political Science categories.
Why are some countries better than others at science and technology (S&T)? Written in an approachable style, The Politics of Innovation provides readers from all backgrounds and levels of expertise a comprehensive introduction to the debates over national S&T competitiveness. It synthesizes over fifty years of theory and research on national innovation rates, bringing together the current political and economic wisdom, and latest findings, about how nations become S&T leaders. Many experts mistakenly believe that domestic institutions and policies determine national innovation rates. However, after decades of research, there is still no agreement on precisely how this happens, exactly which institutions matter, and little aggregate evidence has been produced to support any particular explanation. Yet, despite these problems, a core faith in a relationship between domestic institutions and national innovation rates remains widely held and little challenged. The Politics of Innovation confronts head-on this contradiction between theory, evidence, and the popularity of the institutions-innovation hypothesis. It presents extensive evidence to show that domestic institutions and policies do not determine innovation rates. Instead, it argues that social networks are as important as institutions in determining national innovation rates. The Politics of Innovation also introduces a new theory of "creative insecurity" which explains how institutions, policies, and networks are all subservient to politics. It argues that, ultimately, each country's balance of domestic rivalries vs. external threats, and the ensuing political fights, are what drive S&T competitiveness. In making its case, The Politics of Innovation draws upon statistical analysis and comparative case studies of the United States, Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, Thailand, the Philippines, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Turkey, Israel, Russia and a dozen countries across Western Europe.

Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Economics - Innovation economics, grade: 1,0, LMU Munich, language: English, abstract: This paper is a review of Manso's paper "Motivating Innovation" and is structured as follows: After summing up the theoretical and empirical results, the ambigious effects of Job Security will be critically discussed. Afterward it will be commented on some assumptions made in this paper while suggesting further novel research. Finally, the main findings of Manso will be stated. In the age of disruptive technologies and business models, the most crucial factor innovation is moving more and more into the focus of attention of society. As leading innovative countries set the baron efficient solutions higher, the determinants stay somewhat nebulous. While Zahra and Covin (1994) suggest that "Innovation is widely considered as the [lifeblood] of corporate survival and growth", Bessant et al (2005) emphasize a more general defnition: "Innovation represents the core renewal process in any organization." The latter statement suggests that innovation is not solely important for business organizations but rather for any kind of complex institutions. While the USA emphasized the significance of innovation by launching the Department of Innovation alreadyin 2008 , Germany has increased the public funding of Research and Development by 0.5 percentage points to 3.5percent in the new coalition agreement in 2018. The Department of Trade of the UK exemplifes the relevance of accumulated innovation within acountry. Many scientists have researched on the subject innovation. So do Aghion and Tirole (1994) argue that the outcomes of innovation are unclear, ergo it is difficult to find a cohesive contract which motivates innovation. Whereas the latter paper is studying the measurability of innovation, Manso’s article looks closely at the process of innovation and focuses on the central trade-off between exploration and exploitation. Moreover, Weitzman (1979) uses a simple bandit-problem to describe the innovation process. The substantial difference to Motivating Innovation is that Manso does not only study individual decision problems but also complements the agent by the principal to embed the bandit-problem into a principal-agentframework.The Principal-Agent setting allows him to inquire the tension between exploration and exploitation under a more realistic contract in which the agent usually exhibits private costs when receiving tasks from the principal.

Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 8,00 (niederl. Notensystem), Maastricht University, language: English, abstract: In times of an increasingly unstable global economy, the topic of organizational decline and its effect on innovative activities becomes more and more important. This study aims at contributing to the ongoing academic discussion of whether performance decline facilitates or inhibits investments in innovation. In order to do so, the paper draws on the opposing predictions of the behavioural theory of the firm as well as the threat-rigidity theory and discusses their implications with respect to the thesis topic. More specifically, by investigating a sample of 803 Japanese manufacturing firms from 2008 to 2012, this study explores how organizational decline in terms of performance below aspirations, firm’s threat of bankruptcy, and organizational slack affect decision making about R&D search intensity.

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, language: English, abstract: The goal of this Master’s thesis is to examine the relationship between managerial OR and business model innovations (BMIs) in established organizations. In order to meet the complexity of the topic, this thesis is focused on factors that hinder or help managers in recognizing business opportunities. Focusing on incumbent firms, this paper conducts further research to identify the main influencing factors, including challenges, vulnerabilities, and obstacles. The thesis is divided into six parts, starting with a brief description of the research topic, including the problem position and objective. Second, a literature review is conducted to summarize the state of research, including theoretical foundations. In today's scientific literature the two fields of research BMI & OR are by no means treated independently from each other. For the time being BMI and OR are considered independently of each other. It is then shown exactly how current literature treats managerial OR with respect to BMI. The results are then synthesized into a summary, highlighting what is known and not known. The areas of controversy in the literature are identified and questions are formulated that need further research. The third part of the thesis consists of expert interviews. Derived from the literature review, a guideline for interviews is developed to treat the research gaps in an appropriate way and to meet the complexity of the task setting. The explorative survey aims to identify the challenges and drivers of managerial OR in BMI and to identify approaches that have not yet been addressed in scientific literature to a significant extent. The core of the analysis is the splitting of the BM into the elements value proposition, value creation, and value capture. This ensures that all the facets of a company ́s BM are accurately addressed and form the basis for high-quality results. In order to cover a broad range, the paper does not focus on a certain industry. The interviews are conducted with an array of decision-makers in organizations that have attempted or are currently attempting to innovate their BM at the business unit level or the corporate level. China's economy is growing quickly, and is innovation-led. Europe can relate to China through joint R&D, programmes which offer an alternative vehicle of engagement to the traditional political and economic approaches. Innovation in China: The Dawning of the Asian Century promotes an awareness of the dynamics of innovation in China. It examines Chinese and European approaches to science and technology and contends that the 'rules for survival' in R&D and education are changing in favour of China, in terms of base R&D parameters such as research expenditure, scientists trained, papers published and patents awarded. The authors recommend options for Europe and China to connect through longitudinal R&D projects and 'carrousel-training exchanges' in environmental and health related fields.
