Humanity is fast approaching the point of being able to answer the age-old question: Are we alone in the cosmos? The answer will almost certainly turn out to be 'no'. This is virtually guaranteed by two discoveries made in the last hundred years or so: that the Milky Way is just one of countless galaxies; and that the number of planets beyond our solar system — 'exoplanets' — is vast. But what is extraterrestrial life actually like? What kinds of creatures roam the surfaces of alien planets or swim in their seas? Are they typically in the genre of 'life as we know it', or are they characterized by exotic forms and as-yet undiscovered metabolism? In Parallel Worlds, Wallace Arthur argues that we should expect to find creatures that are similar in broad terms to those of Earth. This can be anticipated because the environments of habitable planets have many parallel features, so Darwinian natural selection should work in parallel ways, producing broadly parallel trees of life. This book takes the form of a step-by-step argument in favour of the hypothesis that there are multiple worlds inhabited by life-forms that are broadly parallel to those of our home planet. Like all good hypotheses, it's testable. The testing won't be easy, and it isn't imminent; but it will happen eventually, providing humanity lasts for long enough.

HTML has been on a wild ride. Sure, HTML started as a mere markup language, but more recently HTML’s put on some major muscle. Now we’ve got a language tuned for building web applications with Web storage, 2D drawing, offline support, sockets and threads, and more. And to speak this language you’ve got to go beyond HTML5 markup and into the world of the DOM, events, and JavaScript APIs. Now you probably already know all about HTML markup (otherwise known as structure) and you know all aboutCSS style (presentation), but what you’ve been missing is JavaScript (behavior). If all you know about are structure and presentation, you can create some great looking pages, but they’re still just pages. When you add behavior with JavaScript, you can create an interactive experience; even better, you can create full blown web applications. Head First HTML5 Programming is your ultimate tour guide to creating web applications with HTML5 and JavaScript, and we give you everything you need to know to build them, including: how to add interactivity to your pages, how to communicate with the world of Web services, and how to use the great new APIs being developed for HTML5. Here are just some of the things you’ll learn in Head First HTML5 Programing: Learn how to make your pages truly interactive by using the power of the DOM. Finally understand how JavaScript works and take yourself from novice to well-informed in just a few chapters. Learn how JavaScript APIs fit into the HTML5 ecosystem, and how to use any API in your web pages. Use the Geolocation API to know where your users are. Bring out your inner artist with Canvas, HTML5’s new 2D drawing surface. Go beyond just plugging a video into your pages, and create custom video experiences. Learn the secret to grabbing five megabytes of storage in every user’s browser. Improve your page’s responsiveness and performance with Web workers. And much more.

African American Consciousness written by Jr. Conyers and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-12 with History categories.

African American Consciousness focuses on ideas of culture, race, and class within the interdisciplinary matrix of Africana Studies. Even more important, it uses a methodology that emphasizes interpretation and the necessity of interdisciplinary research and writing in a global society. Worldview, culture, analytic thinking, and historiography can all be used as tools of analysis, and in the process of discovery, use pedagogy, and survey research of Africana history. Advancing the idea of Africana Studies, mixed methodology, and triangulation, the contributors provide alternative approaches toward examining this phenomena, with regard to place, space, and time. The essays in this volume include Reynaldo Anderson, "Black History dot.com" Greg Carr, "Black Consciousness, Pan-Africanism and the African World History Project" Karanja Carroll, "A Genealogical Review of the Worldview Concept and Framework in Africana Studies" Denise Martin, "Reflections on African Celestial Culture" Serie McDougal "Teaching Black Males" Demetrius Pearson, "Cowboys of Color" Pamela Reed, "Heirs to Disparity" and Andrew Smallwood, "Malcolm X's Leadership and Legacy." The researchers in this volume investigate, explore, and review patterns of functional, normative, and expressive behavior. The past and present of Africana culture is represented, showing how reflexivity can be an adjustable concept to organize, process, and interpret data. Moreover, humanism and social science demonstrate how researchers establish, extract, and identify the limitations and alternative approaches to research of the historic conditions of black Americans.

Green Planet written by Stanley A Rice and has been published by Rutgers University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-01-28 with Nature categories.

Plants are not just a pretty part of the landscape; they keep the entire planet, with all of its human and nonhuman inhabitants, alive. Stanley Rice documents the many ways in which plants do this by making oxygen, regulating the greenhouse effect, controlling floods, and producing all the food in the world. Plants also create natural habitats for all organisms in the world. With illustrations and clear writing for non-specialists, Green Planet helps general readers realize that if we are to rescue the Earth from environmental disaster, we must protect wild plants. Beginning with an overview of how human civilization has altered the face of the Earth, particularly by the destruction of forests, the book details the startling consequences of these actions. Rice provides compelling reasons for government officials, economic leaders, and the public to support efforts to save threatened and endangered plants. Global campaigns to solve environmental problems with plants, such as the development of green roofs and the Green Belt Movement—a women's organization in Kenya that empowers communities worldwide to protect the environment—show readers that efforts to save wild plants can be successful and beneficial to the economic well-being of nations. Through current scientific evidence, readers see that plants are vital to the ecological health of our planet and understand what can be done to lead to a better—and greener—future Benefits of plants: Help modulate greenhouse gases Produce almost all oxygen in the air Create cool shade that reduces energy costs Prevent floods, droughts, and soil erosion Produce all of the food in the world Create and preserve soil Create natural habitats Heal the landscape after natural and human disasters
