Forest Management and Planning provides a focused understanding of contemporary forest management issues through real life examples to engage students. The methodology for the development of quantitatively-derived forest management plans – from gathering information to the implementation of plans at the forest level – are clearly explained. Emphasis is placed on the development of traditional commodity production forest plans using linear programming, the development of alternative forest plans, and problem resolution in planning. The authors have developed this book based on their personal experience in teaching forest management courses and the review of ten forestry programs (Auburn University, University of Georgia, Iowa State University, Louisiana State University, Northern Arizona University, Ohio State University, Pennsylvania State University, University of Florida, Virginia Tech, and Oregon State University). The integration of extended case studies of a variety of scenarios as well as the inclusion of a section on report writing will engage students. Acknowledgement and integration of various software packages for forest management provide the most useful tools for those studying forest management and distinguish this book from the competition. This book is an ideal resource for students of Forest Management – primarily an upper-level course in forestry, and natural resource management, wildlife, and recreation programs. - Real-life examples illustrated mathematically and graphically - End-of-chapter questions - Modern coverage of the planning and management of US Forest timber production - Case study analysis - Expansive applications drawn for examples in the western US, the Lake States, the northeastern US, the southern US and Canada - Detailed descriptions of models and solution methods for integrating a variety of wildlife habitat constraints

Multi Objective Forest Planning written by Timo Pukkala and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-29 with Technology & Engineering categories.
Most of the scientific methods devised for forest planning support timber production ignoring the existence of forest functions other than wood production. Fortunately, the realisation that the forest planning methods available today do not correspond to the needs of today's forestry has activated forest researchers to develop and adopt new methodologies and approaches, which are specifically aimed at multi-objective situations. This book is about the quantitative approach to multi-objective forest planning. The emphasis is on topics that are rather new and not yet systematically applied in forest planning practice. The topics and methodologies discussed in this book include: measurement of preferences, multiple criteria decision analysis, use of GIS to support multi-objective forest management, heuristic optimization, spatial optimisation, and the measurement of non-wood forest outputs. By reading the book, a planning specialist, student or a researcher will get an insight into some of the current developments in forest planning research.

Forest conservation refers to the practice of planning and maintaining forested areas. It also focuses on looking after the natural resources in a forest which are beneficial for the ecosystem and human beings. There are numerous types of forests which are dealt with under this field such as boreal forests, temperate forests and sub-tropical forests. Forest management is a field of forestry that deals with the overall administration of forests including economic, legal, social, scientific and technical aspects such as protection, silviculture and forest regulation. It includes the management of aesthetics, recreation, fish, water, wilderness, wood products, forest genetic resources and wildlife. This textbook attempts to understand the multiple branches that fall under the discipline of forest conservation and management, and how such concepts have practical applications. The topics covered in this extensive book deal with the core of these subjects. It will provide comprehensive knowledge to the readers.

Assessment Of Biodiversity For Improved Forest Planning written by Peter Bachmann and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04-17 with Technology & Engineering categories.
The `Global Biodiversity Strategy' signed in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, and the resolutions at the Ministerial Conferences on the Protection of Forests in Europe in Strasbourg, 1990, and Helsinki, 1993, commit the signatory states to monitor nationally the state of biodiversity and to sustain the characteristic natural variation in the country. Sustainability and long-term planning are the two terms best describing the philosophy of traditional forest management practices. However, the traditional planning techniques are not primarily developed to maintain sustainability of biodiversity. The gap between the international commitments and the practices in forest assessment and management is obvious. This publication presents experience in methodology for assessing and monitoring the variation of ecosystems and habitats in relation to biodiversity conservation and for integrating biodiversity in regional planning of forest management and land use. The state of the art in the field of natural resource assessments with special reference to forest biodiversity is reviewed, progress in integrating data on biodiversity in forest management planning is presented and the information needs regarding biodiversity conservation and the question to what degree assessment methods for forest biodiversity can be simplified for practical applications are discussed. The book is intended for researchers and practitioners in the field of forest and environmental planning and environmental policies.

Decision Support For Forest Management written by Annika Kangas and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-04-01 with Technology & Engineering categories.
The goal of Kangas, Kangas and Kurttila's Decision Support for Forest Management is to provide students and researchers with a toolbox of methods for approaching the different planning situations that may arise in practice. It draws together a wide range of methods used in planning forest management regimes and presents a systematic overview of current methodological approaches. While earlier books concerning forest planning have tended to focus on linear programming, economic aspects, or specific multi-criteria decision aid tools, this book provides a much broader range of tools to meet a variety of planning situations. The methods themselves cover a range of decision situations – from cases involving single decision makers, through group decision making, to participatory planning. They include traditional decision support tools, from optimization to utility functions, as well as methods that are just gaining ground in forest planning – such as problem structuring methods and social choice theory. Including examples which illustrate the application of each technique to specific management planning problems, the book offers an invaluable resource for both researchers and advanced students specializing in management and planning issues relating to forestry.
