Anxious written by Joseph LeDoux and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-14 with Psychology categories.

“[Anxious] helps to explain and prevent the kinds of debilitating anxieties all of us face in this increasingly stressful world.” —Daniel J. Levitin, author of The Organized Mind and This Is Your Brain On Music A comprehensive and accessible exploration of anxiety, from a leading neuroscientist and the author of Synaptic Self Collectively, anxiety disorders are our most prevalent psychiatric problem, affecting about forty million adults in the United States. In Anxious, Joseph LeDoux, whose NYU lab has been at the forefront of research efforts to understand and treat fear and anxiety, explains the range of these disorders, their origins, and discoveries that can restore sufferers to normalcy. LeDoux’s groundbreaking premise is that we’ve been thinking about fear and anxiety in the wrong way. These are not innate states waiting to be unleashed from the brain, but experiences that we assemble cognitively. Treatment of these problems must address both their conscious manifestations and underlying non-conscious processes. While knowledge about how the brain works will help us discover new drugs, LeDoux argues that the greatest breakthroughs may come from using brain research to help reshape psychotherapy. A major work on our most pressing mental health issue, Anxious explains the science behind fear and anxiety disorders.

Fear Anxiety And Panic written by Dean Smith and has been published by Xlibris Corporation this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-09 with Self-Help categories.

I am a thirty-two-year-old school teacher and have suffered from agoraphobia, panic attacks, and generalised anxiety for the past twenty years. Over the years, I have sought help from many psychiatrists, psychologists, general practioners, hypnotherapists, and centres specialising' in the treatment of anxiety and panic. But of the dozens I saw, half had no personal experience with anxiety or panic themselves, and the other half wanted to medicate me so heavily that I could barely care for my newborn. At my darkest hour, feeling there was no hope for me and that the life I wanted to live would be a dream and not a possible reality, I met Dean Smith. The fi rst time I met Dean, I walked in already convinced that he would be just like all the others and that this would all prove to be another dead end for me. However, at the end of our fi rst session, I called my husband, in sobbing tears, saying that I had fi nally found the person who could help me . . . , and he did. Dean's approach to treating anxiety, panic, and fear allowed me to confront my demons but never once feeling afraid to do so. His practical exercises were confronting but had an amazing result. Each session taught me to both challenge and accept my thinking without being frightened anymore. After a year of working with Dean and applying his techniques to my life, my dream life finally became a reality. I once was too afraid to venture to the local shops for fear of having a panic attack in public. In March 2011, I got on a plane with my husband and son and fulfi lled my lifelong dream of going to Europe. Dean Smith gave me the tools to begin my life and discover who I truly am. I am and remain forever grateful to him. Nicky Anxiety and panic attacks led me to Dean. I didn't know or understand what was wrong with me or why these attacks were starting to affect my life and well-being. I went to Dean because I thought I needed fi xing' because something was wrong with me. Working together, I started to learn tools that helped me understand my anxiety. This helped me to stop fearing it; I can honestly say I'm not scared anymore! Yet working with my emotions, using the many skills that I have learnt from Dean, helped me to see that I don't need fi xing. I am perfectly normal, and my anxieties are symptoms triggered by something much deeper, thirty-fi ve years of shame, guilt, and perfectionism . . . Now something was beginning to change me. This has been the biggest challenge in my life; however, beginning to fi nally lean into my feelings of vulnerability, working with them, and understanding them has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. My greatest gratitude goes to Dean for helping me through my journey of awareness. Brenda

Civilisation And Fear written by Wojciech Kalaga and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-03-15 with Social Science categories.

Paradoxically, if nature has always been a source of fear, civilisation – its other and at the same time the epitome of progress and order – has not only doubled fear itself, but also added its new sister, anxiety. In effect, the notions of civilisation, fear and anxiety can hardly be separated. Fear – either linked with anxiety or distinct from it – lies at the foundation of civilisation, which as much promises to shelter us from these afflictions as it does proliferate them. Confronted no longer with the adversary powers of nature, humans have to face now the adversary powers produced by their own endeavours and ideologies. Each effort aimed at attaining an equilibrium results in new, unexpected rifts and breaches into which fear and anxiety grow. Out of the games played between fear and civilisation there emerge new versions of the human subject: homo anxious, homo civilis, homo rationalis. This volume represents a collection of papers devoted to the many various relations between fear and society, culture and civilisation – both Western and Eastern, contemporary and past. The articles collected here approach the relationship of civilisation, fear, anxiety and the subject from multiple perspectives. Relating to modern critical thought, including that of Kant, Freud, Derrida, Kierkegaard, and Heidegger, they investigate the objects, causes and effects of fear: reality, nature, reason, libidinal excess, atheism, critical discourse, technological advances, conspiracy, terrorism, capital punishment, the diversity of cultures, and the breakdown of civilisation as a whole: most of all, however, they explore the various shades of fear itself.
