Media Competence Regarding Facebook Privacy Settings written by Stefanie Groß and has been published by GRIN Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-01-23 with Computers categories.
Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Communications - Multimedia, Internet, New Technologies, grade: 1,0, University of Copenhagen (Deptartment of Media, Cognition and Communication), course: Audience and User Studies, language: English, abstract: In September 2012 Facebook welcomed the one billionth user and can therefore be entitled as the current biggest social interaction platform worldwide. With growing success since its launch in February 2004 questions about privacy security for user data became a growing issue as well. With expanding user numbers these questions seem to become louder than ever. During the years the Facebook has been on international focus for several privacy flaws for instance in 2005 for not encrypting users’ passwords, in 2006 for publishing every single friend activity without any restriction possibilities in a news feed on the personal start page or in 2007 the implementation of a platform for applications by third-party suppliers. In academic treatments about privacy made so far mainly Facebook itself was putted on the spot and accused of violating their user’s privacy. The social network giant was blamed to treat their user’s privacy too carelessly and to make the matter worse Facebook became more and more commercial – with personal data as currency. The start of showing presence at the stock market in 2011 was just the logical consequence of this new company policy. The two latest critic points Facebook needed to defend for were the standard settings for the privacy interface within the context of the new timeline optic and the latest change in Facebook privacy terms. Both changes happened in 2012. After doing some first superficial research it seemed like there is no academic study so far that does not focus on Facebook as a company in charge regarding this matter. But one could wonder if the users themselves are in charge as well. Are we exhausting our options to protect our private data on Facebook? While Facebook’s privacy flaws are well examined, relatively little literature is available on how much users know and care about these issues. My assumption is that most of the users aren’t doing much about the assumed lack of privacy beyond venting about it.

Facebook written by Taina Bucher and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-04-27 with Social Science categories.
Facebook has fundamentally changed how the world connects. No other company has played a greater role in the history of social networking online. Yet Facebook is no longer simply a social networking site or social media platform. Facebook is Facebook. Taina Bucher shows how Facebook has become an idea of its own: something that cannot be fully described using broader categories. Facebook has become so commonplace that most people have a conception of what it is, yet it increasingly defies categorization. If we want to understand Facebook's power in contemporary society and culture, Bucher argues, we need to start by challenging our widespread conception of what Facebook is. Tracing the development and evolution of Facebook as a social networking site, platform, infrastructure and advertising company, she invites readers to consider Facebook anew. Contrary to the belief that nobody uses Facebook anymore, Facebook has never been more powerful. This timely book is important reading for students and scholars of media and communication, as well as anyone seeking to understand the Facebook phenomenon.

Cracking Facebook written by Maria Leena Korpijaakko and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-10-30 with Education categories.
This book presents a Facebook study on members of the Cusp Generation, or those born before the “great digital divide” of 1995. This delineation allows for a discussion on the possible socio-cultural implications of Facebook use for people of all ages. Members of the Cusp Generation are in a unique position as “part digital natives” to easily acquire and use new media technologies, while being more critically aware of the personal, social, and cultural effects that may arise from them thanks to having some memory of the pre-digital era. Drawing on identity theories rooted in critical theory and cultural studies, the author shows that there are potential constrictions on people’s agency in their Facebook use caused by consumer discourse, Facebook’s hyperreal nature and structure, psychological predispositions, and the potential for avatar attachment. In raising concerns over the impacts of technology-based communication, this book explores how the medium of Facebook extends and exacerbates processes of offline social reproduction and discusses how the positive social and political aspects of Facebook can be enhanced. The findings contribute to academic discussions in the fields of cultural studies and Education and can be applied to the development of critical media literacy for curriculum and pedagogy.

With more than 500 million active users around the world and still growing steadily, Facebook is more than just another social media site. In the words of author Dave Awl, Facebook is “the new town square”—the place where people gather to discuss the news of the day as well as share what’s going on in their lives. And Facebook can actually be a useful business tool as well as a great way to promote creative projects. So what's new in the second edition of Facebook Me? Facebook has changed dramatically since the book was first published, and this newly revised and expanded edition will bring readers up to speed on all the new features and interface elements that have been added and revamped in the time since. It addresses the ongoing controversies about Facebook's privacy policies, with detailed coverage of Facebook's privacy settings and advice for keeping your Facebook experience as secure as possible; as well as expanded info on Facebook's sharing tools and how to control who sees what. It includes a brand-new chapter called Advertising and Promoting on Facebook that shows you how to apply the principles of social media marketing specifically to Facebook's user culture, in order to maximize the "ripple effect" of Facebook's news feed to win new fans and customers and build stronger bonds with existing ones. Plus there's an expanded chapter on "Facebook at Work" — how to keep your profile professional, avoid getting in trouble, and use Facebook for job hunting. And in the etiquette department, this edition features new guidance on how to deal with conflict and avoid flame wars between Facebook friends. All in all, Facebook Me! takes you on a guided tour of everything Facebook has to offer and shows you how to get the most out of the time you spend there, while helping you avoid some of its pitfalls! Find out what you can do on Facebook, and what it can do for you. Reconnect with old friends and make new ones, let your friends know what you’re up to, and share photos or video—all while protecting your privacy. Learn Facebook etiquette: how and why to friend someone, how to socialize politely, whether you should friend your boss—and how to keep your profile looking professional if you do. Publicize your projects, business, or causes: Post to your Wall, set up a Page, organize a Group, or invite friends to Events. Discover how to use Facebook’s News Feed to connect with an audience that reaches far beyond the boundaries of your own friends list. Webpages are so yesterday! If you really want your business to succeed you need to get it social. If you’re sitting there thinking, “MySpace here I come!” then you really need this book; if you already know that Facebook is on your business’ to do list, then this book will also come in handy. Before you start thinking “Hey, my mom’s on Facebook...maybe she can be in charge of this project” you should be forewarned—Facebook for Business’ is not yo mama’s Facebook; sure your mom can whip up a page by a few clicks, but if you want to stand out from the rest, then you will have to do something a little more challenging: coding (this is only if your mom isn't up to date like the rest of our moms. If your mom is a coding queen, then why are you reading this again?). Don’t worry! We aren't talking Matthew Broderick hunkered down in front of a computer trying to stop a nuclear war type of coding—this coding is so simple your mom might very well be able to do it...just don’t tell her that, because, trust us, you really don’t want your mom in charge of the social aspect of your business; Gadchick was about to hand over the powers of social media to her mama until her mama said, “I can’t wait to share baby photos of you trying to get milk out of the puppy!” This book is really about the dirty secret programmers don’t won’t you to know about: you can do it yourself! We’ll walk you through the steps, and promise to be gentle—we will bite, but we have no teeth, so it will feel more like a massage. We’ll tell you about iFrames, FBML, and how to set up a Facebook ad campaign for your business.
