This book brings ethnicities into focus by presenting contemporary ethnic discourses that capture and highlight disjuncture within the concept of the idealized “globalizing” world. In recent years and despite many writings about globalization and the melding of differences, there remain strong forces that continue to exacerbate ethnic differences in communication as well as other important areas. This volume addresses this phenomenon through research-based investigation of ethnic and racial issues and covers topics such as health issues, networks, media, and coping. It captures key ethnicities including a growing Hispanic population, native Americans, Middle Easterners, and Asian Americans. This book explores various topics including how ethnicity is defined in communication scholarship, how Twitter has facilitated MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women) cyber activism by cultivating collective indigenous identity, and media framing of Latin American players in Major League Baseball in the United States and offers online experiment and content analysis using 185 participants of different races/ethnicities to examine bonding capital in coping and seeking support. Ethnicities: Media, Health, and Coping will be a key resource for scholars and researchers of communication studies, race and ethnic studies, media and cultural studies, and sociology, while also appealing to anyone interested in the research-based investigation of the communicative aspects of ethnic and racial issues. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Howard Journal of Communications.

Routledge Handbook Of Race And Ethnicity In Asia written by Michael Weiner and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-30 with Social Science categories.

The Routledge Handbook of Race and Ethnicity in Asia introduces theoretical approaches to the study of race, ethnicity and indigeneity in Asia beyond those commonly grounded in the Western experience. The volume’s twenty-eight chapters consider not only the relationship between ethnic or racial minorities and the state, but social relations within and between individual and transnational communities. These shape not only the contours of governance, but also the means by which knowledge of national identity, ‘self ’, and ‘other’ have been constructed and reconstructed over time. Divided into four sections, it provides holistic and comparative coverage of South, South East, and East Asia, as well as Australasia and Oceania; an area that extends from Pakistan in the West to Hawai’i in the East. Contributors to this handbook offer a variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives, opening a domain of scholarship wherein the relationship between phenotype and racism is less pronounced than European and North American approaches, which have often privileged the so-called ‘colour stigmata’, leading to further exclusions of particular ethnic, racial, and indigenous communities. This volume seeks to overcome racism and white ideologies embedded in theories of race and ethnicity in Asia, proving a valuable resource to both students and scholars of comparative racial and ethnic studies, international relations and human rights.

"Investigating the causes and consequences of ethnic conflict, the authors argue that the most effective responses are those that take into account factors at the local, state, regional and global level and that avoid seeking simplistic explanations and solutions to what is a truly complex phenomenon." "Ethnic conflicts are man-made, not natural disasters, and as such they can be understood, prevented and settled. However, it takes skilful, committed and principled leaders to achieve durable settlements that are supported by their followers, and it takes the long-term commitment of the international community to enable and sustain such settlements." --Book Jacket.

Covering the period 1963 to 1986, this study demonstrates the degree of influence that Islam exerts on Malay identity. Islam is not only a focal point in relations between Malays and non-Malays, but also in the Malay ethnic community since Islam is integral to its culture and identity and is involved in a tense, dialectical relationship with Malay ethnicity. The Malay tendency to opt for ethnic Malay-based solutions instead of an Islamic alternative results in an upsurge of Malay ethnic nationalism, and is here explored against the backdrop of the current Islamic resurgence in Malaysia.

Constructing Race And Ethnicity In America written by Dvora Yanow and has been published by M.E. Sharpe this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with History categories.

What do we mean in the U.S. today when we use the terms "race" and "ethnicity"? What do we mean, and what do we understand, when we use the five standard race-ethnic categories: White, Black, Asian, Native American, and Hispanic? Most federal and state data collection agencies use these terms without explicit attention, and thereby create categories of American ethnicity for political purposes. Davora Yanow argues that "race" and "ethnicity" are socially constructed concepts, not objective, scientifically-grounded variables, and do not accurately represent the real world. She joins the growing critique of the unreflective use of "race" and "ethnicity" in American policymaking through an exploration of how these terms are used in everyday practices. Her book is filled with current examples and analyses from a wealth of social institutions: health care, education, criminal justice, and government at all levels. The questions she raises for society and public policy are endless. Yanow maintains that these issues must be addressed explicitly, publicly, and nationally if we are to make our policy and administrative institutions operate more effectively.

They stress the roles of social and behavioral scientists in government multicultural policies, and the nature of possible ethnic group responses to such policies for cultural maintenance and adaptation.
