The growth of pollution that crosses national borders represents a significant threat to human health and ecological sustainability. Various international agreements exist between countries to reduce risks to their populations, however there is often a mismatch between national territories of state responsibility and transboundary hazards. All too often, state priorities do not correspond to the priorities of the people affected by pollution, who often have little recourse against major polluters, particularly transnational corporations operating across national boundaries. Drawing on case studies, The New Accountability provides a fresh understanding of democratic accountability for transboundary and global harm and argues that environmental responsibility should be established in open public discussions about harm and risk. Most critically it makes the case that, regardless of nationality, affected parties should be able to demand that polluters and harm producers be held accountable for their actions and if necessary provide reparations.

This essential text expertly explores seemingly intractable modern-day environmental dilemmas - including climate change, fossil fuel consumption, fresh water quality, industrial pollution, habitat destruction, and biodiversity loss. Starting with 'Silent Spring' and moving through to more recent works the book draws on contemporary ideas of environmental ethics, corporate social responsibility, ecological justice, fair trade, global citizenship, and the connections between environmental and social justice; configuring these ideas into practical notions for responsible action with a unique global and integral focus on responsibility.

Environment And Citizenship written by Mark J. Smith and has been published by Zed Books Ltd. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-07-04 with Political Science categories.

Citizenship and the environment are hotly debated, as climate change places more responsibility on individuals and institutions in shaping policy. Using new evidence and cases from across the globe, Environment and Citizenship explores the new vocabulary of ecological citizenship and examines how successful environmental policy-making depends on the responsible actions of citizens and civil society organizations as much as on governments and international treaties. This accessible and thought-provoking book: - provides a comprehensive and timely guide to the debates on environmental and ecological citizenship, expertly combining examples of practice with theory; - examines how environmental movements have become increasingly involved in governance processes at the local, national, regional and intergovernmental levels; - explores the increasing importance of corporations and transnational networks through examples of stakeholding processes and participatory research in environmental decision-making; - calls on researchers, policy-makers and activists to face a new challenge: how to effectively link environmental justice with social justice. Breaking new ground, Smith and Pangsapa address how environmental responsibility operates through politics, ethics, culture and the everyday experiences of ctivists, as well as how awareness of environmental and social injustice only leads to responsible actions and strategic change through civic engagement.

Managing The Chinese Environment written by Richard L. Edmonds and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with Business & Economics categories.

In the coming decades environmental issues will play an increasing role in China's economic development drive, internal politics, legal development, international relations, and regional development issues. While several books have appeared in the 1990s which describe tangible aspects of China's environmental degradation, this book concentrates its attention on management of China's environment within various contexts and represents the state of thinking on the subject by some of the world's key social scientists in this field. It contains an international perspective of environmental problems in China often lacking in books about the Chinese environment. Chapters discuss environmental degradation in Chinese history, organisation of China's environmental protection network, the legal framework for environmental protection, agricultural land issues, water issues, biodiversity, energy, pollution, public health, and business opportunities for foreign firms. While this book shows that there is lots of room for optimism, it also indicates that many environmental problems remain intractable and some are worsening.

This encyclopedia is composed of an eight-volume set that provides an overview of the field of environmental analysis. The contents are divided into major content areas including air pollution control, environmental law, and environmental sampling. Thevolumes are organized alphabetically with each article signed by the author(s). The individual articles begin with a summary of the topic heading and then divide the text into subtopics indicated by boldface headings. The articles are written clearly, however, the authors assume a basic knowledge of chemistry and math on the part of the reader. For example, the acid mine drainage article refers to the Arrhenius equation, but does not clarify this statement in the text. Each article contains graphs as well as pictures to illustrate points made in the text. The articles are long and provide a detailed explanation of each topic. The authors also provide a bibliography at the end of each article.Special features of the encyclopedia include a list of contributors, a table of conversion factors and a list of abbreviations and acronyms. The preface outlines the general contents of the encyclopedia. The preface also includes sections that suggest the target audience and recommended usages for the set. The final volume of the set contains an alphabetic index to the topics contained in the volumes.
