International, multi-disciplinary perspectives on the key question of community engagement in theory and practice in a diverse range of heritage settings. Across the global networks of heritage sites, museums, and galleries, the importance of communities to the interpretation and conservation of heritage is increasingly being recognised. Yet the very term "meaningful community engagement" betrays a myriad of contrary approaches and understandings. Who is a community? How can they engage with heritage and why would they want to? How do communities and heritage professionals perceive one another? What does itmean to "engage"? These questions unsettle the very foundations of community engagement and indicate a need to unpick this important but complex trend. Engaging Heritage, Engaging Communities critically explores the latest debates and practices surrounding community collaboration. By examining the different ways in which communities participate in heritage projects, the book questions the benefits, costs and limitations of community engagement. Whether communities are engaging through innovative initiatives or in response to economic, political or social factors, there is a need to understand how such engagements are conceptualised, facilitated and experienced by boththe organisations and the communities involved. Bryony Onciul is Lecturer in History at the University of Exeter; Michelle Stefano is the Co-Director of Maryland Traditions, the folklife program for the state of Maryland and Visiting Assistant Professor in American Studies at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County; Stephanie Hawke is a project manager and fundraiser, working on a range of projects aiming to engage communities with culturalheritage. This research examined the community of inquiry as a framework for collaborative, online community engagement with the goal of supporting collaborative participation of community members inhibited from attending face-to-face engagement opportunities. The community of inquiry framework was used to design a two-week, online, asynchronous community engagement experience for ten participants divided into two groups. Case study qualitative methods were used to explore the records of discussion to determine how the community of inquiry supported online community engagement as well as identify impediments to its development. The framework supported community engagement; however, participants did not complete the inquiry cycle. Potential inhibitors to the framework's development included participant motivation, lack of engagement between participants, response timing in asynchronous discussion, and the overall time available to complete the study. In response to these results, promising practices and a modified community of inquiry model were proposed for application in a community engagement setting.

Engaging Communities In Cultural Heritage written by Tuuli Lähdesmäki and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-09-30 with Art categories.

This book explores the concepts and practices of participation and community engagement in cultural heritage, examining the impact of the participatory turn in the heritage sector and the key opportunities and challenges it presents. Participation has become a widely used umbrella term in the discourses of heritage institutions, practitioners, and scholars alike. This participatory turn represents a shift towards the active involvement of communities, stakeholders, and the public in decision-making processes, moving away from traditional top-down approaches towards more inclusive and collaborative models in which diverse voices contribute to cultural heritage. While the pluralisation of heritage narratives, meanings, and practices can sometimes give rise to societal tensions, this book argues that broader participation is essential for unlocking heritage’s transformative potential and future-oriented impetus. The book explores these issues through 15 case studies drawn from across the globe and organised into three thematic sections: social inclusion in heritage practices, the role of digital tools in heritage participation, and participatory heritage management and governance. These case studies contribute to emerging debates on expanding the spaces where heritage participation and community engagement take place. Interdisciplinary in nature, this book is intended for scholars and professionals working on cultural heritage, participation, social inclusion, digitisation, management, and community and audience engagement. It is also well-suited for undergraduate and graduate courses that critically examine heritage participation and community engagement in today’s pluralistic societies.
