Enrico Fermi’s scientific work, noted for its originality and breadth, has had lasting consequences throughout modern science. Written by close colleagues as well as scientists whose fields were profoundly influenced by Fermi, the papers collected here constitute a tribute to him and his scientific legacy. They were commissioned on the occasion of his 100th birthday by the Italian Physical Society and confirm that Fermi was a rare combination of theorist, experimentalist, teacher, and inspiring colleague. The book is organized into three parts: three biographical overviews by close colleagues, replete with personal insights; fourteen analyses of Fermi's impact by specialists in their fields, spanning physics, chemistry, mathematics, and engineering; and a year-by-year chronology of Fermi’s scientific endeavors. Written for a general scientific audience, Enrico Fermi: His Work and Legacy offers a highly readable source on the life of one of the 20th century's most distinguished scientists and a must for everybody interested in the history of modern science.

Environment And Urbanization In Modern Italy written by Federico Paolini and has been published by University of Pittsburgh Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-12 with History categories.
From the second half of the 1940s, when postwar reconstruction began in Italy, there were three notable driving forces of environmental change: the uncontrollable process of urban drift, fueled by considerable migratory flows from the countryside and southern regions toward the cities where large-scale productive activities were beginning to amass; unruly industrial development, which was tolerated since it was seen as the necessary tribute to be paid to progress and modernization; and mass consumption. In his fourth book, Federico Paolini presents a series of essays ranging from the uses of natural resources, to environmental problems caused by means of transport, to issues concerning environmental politics and the dynamics of the environment movement. Paolini concludes the book with a forecast about the environmental problems that will emerge in the public debate of the twenty-first century.

Solar Thermal And Biomass Energy written by G. Lorenzini and has been published by WIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-02-10 with Technology & Engineering categories.
This book concerns renewable energy sources and in particular, it collects the state-of-the-art in thermal solar techniques and biomasses. Conventional energy sources based on oil, coal and natural gas are damaging economic and social progress, the environment and human life. Many people are concerned about these problems and wish to address the symptoms as a matter of urgency, but not all understand the basic causes and consequently do not realize that not only technological, but also social changes are required. It is now widely acknowledged that renewable energy capacity has to be increased by exploiting its enormous potential. A policy of energy sustainability can’t leave solar energy exploitation out of consideration. Besides being the origin of almost all the other energy sources, renewable and conventional, excluding geothermic, nuclear and gravitational (tides) ones, the energy provided by the Sun is free, endless and clean (the devices used to exploit solar energy are characterized by very low emissions while running). Moreover solar energy is easy to harness and distribute (it is particularly abundant in many world areas with depressed and difficult economic situation). Very few books treat so diffusely the state-of-the-art in thermal solar technologies and especially biomasses, a topic in which there is a bit of confusion due to the very wide range of technologies related to this area. Renewable energy education is a relatively new field and previously it formed a minor part of traditional university courses. However, over the past decade, several new approaches have emerged: we see these in the new literature and, even more clearly, in new books. The present treatise, in the authors’ auspices, represents a contribution to this new ‘incoming science’.

In 1972, the US Navy installed a base for nuclear submarines in the Archipelago of La Maddalena off the northeastern shore of Sardinia, Italy. In response, Italy established a radiation surveillance program to monitor the impact of the base on the environment and public health. In the first systematic study of nuclear expertise in Italy, Davide Orsini focuses on the ensuing technopolitical disputes concerning the role and safety of US nuclear submarines in the Mediterranean Sea from the Cold War period to the closure of the naval base in 2008. His book follows the struggles of different groups—including local residents of the archipelago, US Navy personnel, local administrators, Italian experts, and politicians—to define nuclear submarines as either imperceptible threats, much like radiocontamination, or efficient machines at the service of liberty and freedom. Unlike inland nuclear power plants, vividly present and visible with their tall cooling towers and reactor containers, the mobility and invisibility of submarines contributed to an ambivalence about their nature, perpetuating the idea of nuclear exceptionalism. In Italy, they symbolized objects in constant motion, easily removable at the first sign of potential harm. Orsini demonstrates how these mobile sources of hazard posed special challenges for both expert assessments and public understandings of risk, and in contexts outside the Anglo-Saxon world, where unique social power dynamics held sway over the outcome of technopolitical controversies.

This book is the first publication which offers an overview of the renewable energies situation for every Member State in the European Union. All 15 country studies have been carried out using the same format. At the beginning of each chapter/case study, a definition of renewable energies is given for the individual country. The starting position in energy policy and the main actors are then described. Next, the instruments for promoting renewable energies are shown and each section concludes with an analysis of current obstacles and conditions for future success. Apart from a comparison of case studies in the introduction, the book gives an overview of the renewable energy policy at the EU level. Finally, a service chapter at the end of the book informs the reader about the most important associations, websites, and journals pertinent to the subject matter.

Realizing An Alternative Political Economy Of Sustainability written by Arturo Hermann and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-07-25 with Business & Economics categories.
Engagement with and between a plurality of progressive, non-neoclassical traditions is an important step in fostering a more capacious understanding of sustainability – both as a concept and as a political objective. To that end, this book provides a critical overview of the development of alternative perspectives on the economics of sustainability, highlighting the presence of various strands of heterodox economics and radical ecology, and arguing that greater engagement between these schools of thought is required to help formulate viable alternatives to the prevailing neoliberal ideology. The chapters in Part I of this volume, "Ecofeminism, Social Ecological Economics, Bioeconomics, Steady State", present a series of concrete policy proposals for building socially just, sustainable socio-economic processes. Each chapter utilizes the acumen of a given heterodox tradition to formulate policy reforms to secure this objective. In Part II, "Heterodox Macroeconomics and Sustainability", the contributors make the case for more radical forms of socio-economic transformation, particularly emphasizing community, local and regional level initiatives for change. The final part, "Circular Economy, Civil Economy and Other Heterodox Contributions", reflects on the potential strategic political-economic contribution of heterodox economics to building more sustainable and just socio-economic practices in a broader sense. These chapters demonstrate that heterodox economics and radical ecology can productively contribute to realizing sustainability in areas such as economic pedagogy, through working in conjunction with other social justice movements, and by challenging extant neoliberal ideologies of sustainability. They also deliberate on some of the institutional and epistemological challenges that confront heterodox practitioners seeking to make such an impact. This volume is essential reading for anyone concerned with a viable alternative conception of the economy and sustainability, including readers from all schools of heterodox economics and radical ecology, and people and organizations involved in various ways in building an alternative political economy of sustainability.
