None So Deaf As Those Who Won T Hear A Comedietta In One Act written by Herbert Pelham Curtis and has been published by Good Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-12-20 with Drama categories.

In "None so Deaf As Those Who Won't Hear: A Comedietta in One Act," Herbert Pelham Curtis explores themes of communication and miscommunication through sharp wit and astute social commentary. This one-act play brilliantly utilizes the structure of farce while engaging with serious undertones, illustrating the absurdities of human interaction. The dialogue is crisp and imbued with humor, allowing the audience to reflect on the characters' truths amid their comic failures, thus situating the piece within the broader context of modernist theater where irony and complexity are prominent. Herbert Pelham Curtis, an American playwright and critic of the early 20th century, was influenced by the cultural shifts of his time'Äîparticularly the burgeoning suffrage movement and the emerging complexities of urban life. His keen observations on societal behaviors and relationships inform his works, as he sought to challenge audiences to confront their own weaknesses and failures in communication. Curtis's background in both the arts and social critique lends depth to his characters and themes, making them resonate with both humor and insight. For those who seek a thought-provoking yet entertaining theatrical experience, this comedietta is an essential read. Curtis'Äôs ability to marry humor with poignant social critique invites readers and performers alike to engage thoughtfully with the material. I wholeheartedly recommend "None so Deaf As Those Who Won't Hear" to anyone interested in the dynamics of communication and the playful yet serious nature of human interaction.

Studies of women's roles in the secular literary world, as patrons, authors, readers, and characters in secular literature. This second volume of proceedings from the `Women and the Book' conference, held at St Hilda's College, Oxford in 1993, brings together fifteen papers dealing with women's experience in the secular literary world. It covers the whole variety of roles women might take, as patrons, authors, readers, and characters in secular literature; encompassed in its range are well-known characters, real and fictional, such as Christine de Pisan and the Wife of Bath, and the more obscure but no less fascinating topic of women in Chinese medieval court poetry. Like its predecessor Women, the Book, and the Godly(Brewer, 1995), this volume illuminates the world of medieval women with carefulscholarship and attention to sources, producing new readings and new materials which shed fresh light on an increasingly important field of study. Cleburne County and Its People is a historical account of Cleburne County and the men and women who made it what it is today. These men and women were as diverse as the Ozark Mountain's rock-laden landscapes. The pioneers who settled Cleburne County were as strong as the land, of hardy pioneer stock, and bold in thought and action. They were shrewd, strong-willed individuals who brought staunch beliefs and strong disciplines with them and settled in an untamed wilderness which became Cleburne County. Cleburne County and Its Peoplehas drawn from the past and the present--chronicling the lives of settlers facing hardships and tragedies, discovering profound beauty, mastering vast natural resources, and formulating democratic ideals. The stories in this book are honest interpretations of the human experience intertwined with the old and the new and adding exciting dimensions to the county of Cleburne and the state of Arkansas. The objective of Carl J. Barger, the compiler of Cleburne County and Its People, is to preserve a history of the county of his birth for students, historians, and all of the citizens of Cleburne County. Carl J. Barger is the author of Swords and Plowshares, a Civil War love story, and Mamie, an Ozark Mountain Girl of Courage, a story of the Ozark Mountain people, set in Cleburne and Van Buren Counties.

The Enlightenment In Practice written by Jeremy L. Caradonna and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-03-15 with History categories.

Public academic prize contests—the concours académique—played a significant role in the intellectual life of Enlightenment France, with aspirants formulating positions on such matters as slavery, poverty, the education of women, tax reform, and urban renewal and submitting the resulting essays for scrutiny by panels of judges. In The Enlightenment in Practice, Jeremy L. Caradonna draws on archives both in Paris and the provinces to show that thousands of individuals—ranging from elite men and women of letters artisans, and peasants—participated in these intellectual competitions, a far broader range of people than has been previously assumed. Caradonna contends that the Enlightenment in France can no longer be seen as a cultural movement restricted to a small coterie of philosophers or a limited number of printed texts. Moreover, Caradonna demonstrates that the French monarchy took academic competitions quite seriously, sponsoring numerous contests on such practical matters as deforestation, the quality of drinking water, and the nighttime illumination of cities. In some cases, the contests served as an early mechanism for technology transfer: the state used submissions to identify technical experts to whom it could turn for advice. Finally, the author shows how this unique intellectual exercise declined during the upheavals of the French Revolution, when voicing moderate public criticism became a rather dangerous act.
