Dostoevsky's underground man is a psychologically tourtured poor clerk, who muses on his 'sickness' and the detested notions of self-interest. Scornful of himself and of others, he recalls finding love at a brothel - but it is a love by his very nature he cannot accept, and so debases instead.

"Dostoevsky's influence on the modern literary mind is [universal] in its scope and vitality. Nowhere does his art appear in so quintessential a form as in Notes from Underground, certainly one of the most revolutionary and original works in world literature. Nowhere is his thought presented with such authority as in 'The Grand Inquisitor,' an episode of central importance taken from his last and greatest novel, The Brothers Karamazov. In both these vital works Dostoevsky confronts the reader with the tragic grandeur of man--indeed, with a whole philosophy of tragedy--the tragedy of the individual and freedom, the tragedy of historical progress, the tragedy of universal evil. Both Notes from Underground and 'The Grand Inquisitor' are presented here in the Constance Garnett translations scrupulously revised by the editor. In addition, of particular interest and importance is the unique background material for Notes from Underground selected and translated by Professor Matlaw, much of it previously unavailable in English. This material includes passages from Chernyshevsky's What Is to Be Done?, selections from Dostoevsky's Letters and Winter Notes on Summer Impressions, Shchedrin's satire on the Notes called 'The Swallows,' and Dostoevsky's equally satiric rebuttal, 'Mr. Shchedrin, or, Schism among the Nihilists.'"--from the back cover.

Is Russia So Different Now, 150 Years Later? Notes from Underground, also translated as Notes from the Underground or Letters from the Underworld, is an 1864 novella by Fyodor Dostoevsky. Notes is considered by many to be one of the first existentialist novels. It presents itself as an excerpt from the rambling memoirs of a bitter, isolated, unnamed narrator (generally referred to by critics as the Underground Man) who is a retired civil servant living in St. Petersburg. The first part of the story is told in monologue form, or the underground man's diary, and attacks emerging Western philosophy, especially Nikolay Chernyshevsky's What Is to Be Done'. The second part of the book is called ""Apropos of the Wet Snow,"" and describes certain events that, it seems, are destroying and sometimes renewing the underground man, who acts as a first person, unreliable narrator and anti-hero. Notes from the Underground is recounted from the perspective of an unnamed narrator who describes himself as sick, spiteful, and unattractive. His thoughts and his moods veer unpredictably as he reflects on the folly of idealism and the reality of human squalor and degradation. The psychological power of the book is deeply rooted in the conflicts and contradictions that afflict the narrator—many of which seem to have afflicted Dostoevsky himself. Once attracted to idealistic and utopian notions, he subsequently found himself repelled by them. A passionate advocate of freedom, he had little confidence that humans could use freedom for good. The narrator of Notes from the Underground is not a unified self, but a self-contradictory character, like his author. His bewildering complexity and relentless self-analysis make him one of the most memorable and thought-provoking protagonists of modern literature. This new translation of Notes from the Underground renders Dostoevsky’s famous work in readable and idiomatic contemporary English. As well as the full text of the work itself and an informative introduction, this edition provides background materials that offer personal and intellectual context for the work. These materials (also newly translated) include writings from some of the thinkers against whom Dostoevsky positioned himself; excerpts from Dostoevsky’s personal letters and his earlier published works; and a substantial selection of relevant illustrations and photographs.
