AN INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER WITH A NEW PREFACE 'Masterly... Utterly compelling... A highly readable and engaging tour' Sam Freedman, The Times From the New York Times bestselling author of The Signal and the Noise, the definitive guide to our era of risk—and the players raising the stakes In the bestselling The Signal and the Noise, Nate Silver showed how forecasting would define the age of Big Data. Now, in this timely and riveting new book, Silver investigates "The River," or those whose mastery of risk allows them to shape—and dominate—so much of modern life. These professional risk takers—poker players and hedge fund managers, crypto true-believers and blue-chip art collectors—can teach us much about navigating the uncertainty of the 21st century. By embedding within these worlds, Silver offers insight into a range of issues that affect us all, from the frontiers of finance to the future of AI. The River has increasing amounts of wealth and power in our society, and understanding their mindset—including the flaws in their thinking—is key to understanding what drives technology and the global economy today. There are certain commonalities in this otherwise diverse group: high tolerance for risk; appreciation of uncertainty; affinity for numbers; skill at de-coupling; self-reliance and a distrust of the conventional wisdom. For the River, complexity is baked in, and the work is how to navigate it, without going beyond the pale. Taking us behind-the-scenes from casinos to venture capital firms to meetings of the effective altruism movement, On the Edge is a deeply-reported, all-access journey into a hidden world of powerbrokers and risk takers.

Noël Coward combines a fresh appraisal of major plays by one of the twentieth century’s most popular dramatists, with an account of critical and theatrical responses to his life and work. For almost the entirety of the twentieth century, Noël Coward was one of the UK’s most popular and celebrated playwrights. Refracting, rather than directly reflecting the social and personal issues of his time, his plays reveal tensions and contradictions in the theatre world that surrounded them. As well as critical responses to his work and the key themes that it foregrounds, seminal productions of The Vortex, Private Lives, Design for Living, Hay Fever, Blithe Spirit and more are examined to further elaborate on the radicalism of his approach to personal and social relationships, and the ways in which directors and actors have sought to achieve a sense of the disquiet felt by critics and audiences when they were first produced. This book explores the question of what Coward’s work can speak to for today’s modern audiences, assessing his standing in terms of how conditions have changed in the theatre and society more broadly since they were written. Part of the Routledge Modern and Contemporary Dramatists series, Noël Coward provides undergraduate students on Theatre Studies degrees and Modern Drama courses an essential and accessible guide to the playwright’s work and illustrates the influence of his drama on what theatre can tell us about our society.

In 1887, Tip O'Neill, left fielder for the St. Louis Browns, won the American Association batting championship with a .492 average--the highest ever for a single season in the Major Leagues. Yet his record was set during a season when a base on balls counted as a hit and a time at bat. Over the next 130 years, the debate about O'Neill's "correct" average diverted attention from the other batting feats of his record-breaking season, including numerous multi-hit games, streaks and long hits, as well as two cycles and the triple crown. The Browns entered 1887 as the champions of St. Louis, the American Association and the world. Following the lead set by their manager, Charles Comiskey, the Browns did "anything to win," combining skill with an aggressive style of play that included noisy coaching, incessant kicking, trickery and rough play. O'Neill did "everything to win" at the plate, leaving the no-holds-barred tactics to his rowdier teammates.
