"Santri pinggiran" is a term that refers to a community of students who are marginalized or intentionally marginalized politically and economically by the government. They were excluded from the pace of modernization and development because of their disobedience to the government. The villagers of Mangadeg carried out a "silent resistance" against the government that cannot be separated from the role of the kiai who is their patron. This work highlights a unique and interesting santri community for whom all the kiai's fatwas become "holy words" that must be obeyed. Through discourse analysis the author not only succeeds in presenting the struggles of Islam and local culture but at the same time dissects the worldview of society, the background of resistance to the government, rejection of new cultures, absolute obedience to the kiai, and the hegemony of the kiai with their political and economic power relations.
