Ambivalence (as in practical conflicts, moral dilemmas, conflicting beliefs, and mixed feelings) is a central phenomenon of human life. Yet ambivalence is incompatible with entrenched philosophical conceptions of personhood, judgement, and action, and is denied or marginalised by thinkers of diverse concerns. This book takes a radical new stance, bringing the study of core philosophical issues together with that of ambivalence. The book proposes new accounts in several areas – including subjectivity, consciousness, rationality, and value – while elucidating a wide range of phenomena expressive of ambivalence, from emotional ambivalence to self-deception. The book rejects the view that ambivalence makes a person divided, showing that our tension-fraught attitudes are profoundly unitary. Ambivalence is not tantamount to confusion or to paralysis: it is always basically rational, and often creative, active, and perceptive as well. The book develops themes from Wittgenstein, Davidson, Sartre, and Freud. It engages with contemporary debates in Analytic Philosophy in addition to work ranging from Aristotle to Cultural Studies and Empirical Psychology, and considers a rich set of examples from daily life and literature.

Various assessments of some major features of the police occupation and role by psychiatrists, attorneys, administrators, and others are presented in this collection of papers. The volume stresses the uncertainties, ambiguities, and ambivalences of the police role in society in the past and present which are likely to persist in the foreseeable future. Historical similarities are revealed in the relative permanence and continuity of the problems of the police as they confront violent and disruptive events in every epoch. Suggestions and predictions with regard to the future roles of the police are made. The organizational and institutional constraints of the police system are examined, with particular attention to the bureaucratic qualities that determine the lifestyles, career lines, and policy decisions of police organizations. It is said that the police share many of the dilemmas and unresolved conflicts of professionalization common to other occupations. The police world view is examined, and the sources of their values of loyalty, authoritarianism, and defensiveness are explored. They are compared with other professional groups which undergo a similar estrangement as they become more experienced in their work situation. Several articles deal with the issue of police corruption. A chapter on police discretion analyzes some factors which affect a police officer's virtually uncontrolled discretion in the performance of his duty. Growing up as the daughter of a funeral director in Fort Bend County, Texas, Marie Theresa Hernández was a frequent visitor to the San Isidro Cemetery, a burial place for Latino workers at the Imperial Sugar Company, based in nearby Sugar Land. During these years she acquired from her father and mother a sense of what it was like to live as an ethnic minority in Jim Crow Texas. Therefore, returning to the cemetery as an ethnographer offered Hernández a welcome opportunity to begin piecing together a narrative of the lives and struggles of the Mexican American community that formed her heritage. However, Hernández soon realized that San Isidro contained hidden depths. The cemetery was built on the former grounds of an old slave-owning plantation. Her story quickly burgeoned from one of immigrant laborers working the land of the giant sugar company to one of the slave laborers who had worked the sugar plantations decades before, but whose history had been largely wiped out of the narrative of the affluent, white-majority county. Much like an archeologist, Hernández began carefully brushing away layers of time to reveal the fragile, entombed remnants of a complex, unknown past. A professional photographer as well as a scholar, Hernández provides visual images to spur the reader's imagination and anchor the narrative in historical reality. She mines interviews, newspaper accounts, and other primary sources--interpreted through her own rich sense of place and time--to reconstruct the identity of a community where the Old South, the wealthy New South, and the culture from south of the border all comingle to form an almost iconic symbol for today's America. In this complex and nuanced, self-reflexive ethnography, Hernández interweaves personal memory and group history, ethnic experience and class . . . even death and life.
