The art world, as society in general, is undergoing profound change, as resources to support the arts are severely limited. The purpose of this study is to examine the patron model as a method by which support of the arts could flourish within society. The paper identifies Eli Broad and the Broad Foundation as the model of a twenty-first century patron that balances support for the contemporary art environment while establishing a positive symbiotic relationship with the community. The Broad approach to the art world and his active role in the cultural environment in Los Angeles, California exemplifies the traditional model of the art patron. In addition, he creates a particularly contemporary model of patronage that incorporates traditional aspects of collecting and philanthropy with a realization of the need for adaptability in modern society and in today's evolving art market. The patron model is premised on a realization that support between the private and public sectors is critical to success. By maintaining a commitment to the arts of Los Angeles, Eli Broad and the Broad Foundation create the environment to allow a new generation of patrons to develop. The paper concludes that the Broad patron model represents the most visible and successful example of the model within the art community by creating the impetus for municipal government to focus attention on the arts to maintain the long-term development of both.
