This edition of one of the Western canon’s most iconic plays brings back into print the pivotal 1890 translation by William Archer. It was this translation that was largely responsible for the huge impact that A Doll’s House had in the English-speaking world, igniting as it did, in the words of one critic, “a firestorm of critical debate and dissent” about marriage and women’s rights. Accompanying the comprehensively annotated text of the play is a substantial introduction that combines critical analysis with biographical and historical context. An extensive series of appendices provides extracts from contemporary adaptations of A Doll’s House; writings by William Archer and Bernard Shaw about the play; reviews of early productions in London, New York, Montreal, and Sydney; contemporary documents relating to Ibsen and feminism; and views of actresses on playing the role of Nora.

When A Doll's House was first published in 1879 it created a sensation. The play follows the ordinary life of a housewife. Gradually the tensions within her marriage become clear and build to a final, stunning action. The play is widely studied because of its sharp critique of 19th century marriage norms, and its feminist tendencies.

The book discusses responses to Ibsen, especially those of George Bernard Shaw and William Archer in London, and the relationship of the play to issues of theatrical censorship. (More modern treatments, like the remarkable ones by Ingmar Bergman and by Fassbinder, are also covered.) The character of Nora leads into a discussion of feminism, and her relationship with Torvald and the performance of the crucial tarantella is sensitively discussed.

A Doll’s House is a three-act play written by Henrik Ibsen in the late 19th century, focusing on Nora Helmer’s marriage to Torvald and the struggles of gender roles, deception, and identity within societal expectations. At the start, Nora cheerfully prepares for Christmas, revealing her childlike demeanor while Torvald exhibits a patronizing affection. Beneath this surface lies a hidden truth: Nora has secretly taken out a loan to save her husband’s life, which becomes the central source of conflict. The arrival of her old friend Mrs. Linde and the involvement of Krogstad heighten the tension and complexity of the narrative. Ultimately, the play portrays Nora’s awakening and her quest for freedom against the backdrop of rigid social conventions.

This 1995 critical study of Ibsen's A Doll's House addresses fundamental questions of text, reception and performance. What is the definitive 'version' of A Doll's House: original text, translation, stage presentation, radio version, adaptation to film or television? What occurs when a drama intended for recipients in one language is translated into another, or when a play written for the stage is adapted for radio, television or film? And to what extent do differences between the media and between directorial approaches influence the meaning of the play text? Discussions of these issues include an internal analysis of the dramatic text and comparative performance analysis, framed by the biographical background to the play and its impact on dramas by Strindberg, Shaw and O'Neill and on films by Ingmar Bergman. The book concludes with a list of productions and a select bibliography.

A Doll's House is a three-act play by Henrik Ibsen, that premiered in 1879. Set in a Norwegian town, it tells the story of Nora Helmer and her husband Torvald. Amidst secrets and lies, and threats to reputation, Nora comes to see her husband for what he really is, and their marriage as something she no longer wants a part of. The play is significant for its critical attitude toward 19th century marriage norms, and although it comes across as a feminist play, Ibsen denies that that was his intent. The play is based on the life of a friend of Ibsen's - Laura Kieler, whose married life had similarities of those of Nora and Torvald. Laura had signed an illegal loan to find a cure for her husband's illness. When he found out, he had her committed to an insane asylum. It was at this point that Ibsen, shaken by what had happened to his friend, wrote A Doll's House. For her part, Laura went on to become a well known author.
